This is a great experience for your 6th-12th grader who enjoys the technical side of things. This 3-week workshop covers stage lighting, sound design and theater makeup, and your student will “graduate” by helping produce our production of Jungle Book on November 16th! John Rudolf, Set Designer/ Lighting Designer/ Sound designer/ and Director. – is an educator with a Master’s of Education. He currently teaches English and Drama classes for a nationally recognized and respected Charter school in Philadelphia. John is a member of SAG-AFTRA, and he has run Drama programs at four area high schools. In addition, John has been a founding member of three professional theatre companies performing at Cheltenham Arts Center, the Keswick Theatre, Grace Presbyterian Church, and most recently at St. John of the Cross in Abington. Today, he works with several Community Theatres as:

Stage Lighting – This is an introductory class exploring the basics of stage lighting. This is hands-on participation in “hanging” lights, running cables, and controlling the lights. Students will design and light a scene. During the class, we will discuss terminology; types of lighting instruments; focusing; power sources; programming a lighting board; gelling lights, and more. The class will culminate in working on a “Live” performance with students running the show!

Sound Design – This is an introductory class exploring the basics of Sound design. This is hands-on participation working with a variety of microphones and the operation of a Soundboard, including effects. During the class, students will discuss terminology; types of microphones; controlling the shape of the room; active and passive speakers; operating a Soundboard; applying body microphones, and more. The class will culminate in working on a “Live” performance with students running the show!

Stage Make-up – This is an introductory class exploring the basics of stage make-up. Students will learn the influence lighting has on creating make-up, additionally, they will discover the basic techniques to create “Special Effects” stage and movie make-up such as bruises, black- eyes, gashes, and more! During the class, we will discuss terminology; types of make-up; application techniques and tools; how to develop a Make-up plot; and more. If possible, the class will culminate in working on a “Live” performance with students creating the make-up!
